Peers Delegation to Israel – Day 3
ELNET UK and the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Britain-Israel's Peers Delegation to Israel - Day 3
Peers Delegation Visits Kerem Shalom Crossing - Border Crossing with Gaza
Peers Delegation Visits Kerem Shalom Crossing
The Kerem Shalom Crossing is the sole commercial crossing for the transfer of goods to and from Gaza. It is managed by the Israel Airports Authority and is used by trucks carrying goods from Israel or Egypt to the Gaza Strip – a critical lifeline for its two million residents.
Lord Bourne – Conservative Peer, on his first ever visit to Israel: “Elnet UK’s House of Lords 22 member delegation to Israel has enjoyed a fantastically varied programme of visits and activities over the past few days. This morning we had the privilege of visiting the Gaza Strip where we had an MOD briefing on the inspection of goods crossing into Gaza from Israel.
We saw piles of equipment confiscated as that equipment was intended for use as offensive attack weapons to be used against Israel. We heard too, of the exposure of drug smuggling.
Yet that crossing and others are vital lifelines for those living in Gaza – some 2.2 million people.
Security Briefing at Givat Hapa'amonim
Lord Turnberg (Jewish) Labour Peer. “Seeing the Iron Dome defence system close up this morning brought home to us the remarkable inventiveness of Israel when it comes to its security. This, together with ‘David’s Sling’ and the ‘Arrow 3’, means Israel has a significant capability for defence against the hundreds of missiles fired at Israel by those who seek to attack it.”
Peers visit the Snake playground in Sderot
The traditional bomb shelter is reinvented to look like a snake. The “snake” lays throughout a playground. This ensures children easy access to a safe shelter if needed.
Dinner with British Amb. Neil Wigan
